Showing a Tibbie in Conformation

Tibbies can be a real delight at a dog show because they require little grooming and are such easy travelers. For air travel, they can ride in a “sherpa” bag under the seat.

Sherpa bags can also help at ring side if you are showing several Tibbies and do not have enough people to hold dogs for you.

If you decide to show your Tibbie in conformation, you need to begin with the best quality puppy or young adult you can afford. Many times the young adults have had some show training and may even have some points towards their Championship.(An AKC Championship requires a total of 15 points which must include at least two major wins under two different judges. Points are calculated by how many Tibbies are present and being shown and in what area of the United States the show takes place.) More information is available on conformation showing at the AKC website, www.akc.org.

Making the commitment to a breeder to show a dog to an AKC championship is a serious undertaking. You will be expected to keep the Tibbie in top condition without trimming or scissoring to remove tangles. Most AKC shows are on weekends and must be entered at least 3 weeks in advance. Once you have entered your dog, you are expected to attend or to send your dog with someone else. Ring times vary as well and on some days you will actually be needed in the ring at 8am and on other days may not be showing until 2:30pm.

Grooming your Tibbie on the day of the show is quite simple. He should be clean (a bath within the last 5 days) and have his toenails short. Do NOT remove whiskers or any of the excess hair on Tibbie feet. Make sure your Tibbie is accustomed to letting strangers examine his teeth and body.

Put a secure show collar or martindale on him, fluff up his tail and comb through his coat and you are ready to pick up your armband at ringside. Be patient with young Tibbies at shows. They may be intimidated by the bigger dogs and the noise. Also walking on the ring “matting” will be new to them. Take a toy with you and let your puppy have fun…the more he enjoys showing the more you will enjoy going to the shows with him.

A match (an unofficial dog show) is a great way to begin learning to show a dog and to train young puppies. Watch experienced Kristy Walker train a Tibbie baby .

First teach her to stand square on the table…

Aamilet Lil Bit of Heaven (Lil Bit) greets her first judge with Kristy’s reassurance.

Kristy encourages Lil Bit to gait straight in the middle of the mat.

Lil Bit’s wagging tail proves she is having fun and learning at the same time.

Lil Bit and Kristy earn a Group Placement at her first match!!!

We offer a special thanks to Terry Walker for the wonderful pictures of Kristy and Lil Bit. His attention to detail and photography skills allowed us to illustrate this page!

A couple of months later at their first "real" show, Kristy and Lil Bit are Winners and receive two points towards an AKC Championship. At each show, points are awarded to one male and one female according to the number of each being shown. A "major" is a show worth 3, 4 or 5 pts in one win. to earn a Championship Title with AKC a total of 15 points must be accumulated with at least two of the awards being "major" points.

Congratulations Kristy !!!
